Starkey International is guided by its Founder Mrs. Mary Louise Starkey and is supported by a host of faculty, service experts, and experienced graduates. Starkey curricula classes are provided throughout the United States. Our administrative headquarters and central Institute is located in downtown Denver, Colorado. The corporate educational culture at Starkey is that of a team approach - mutually nurturing and positive support, with a commitment to continued learning.

“Service as a Relationship,” Mrs. Starkey, known as the First Lady of Service, has thirty years as CEO of Denver based Starkey International® and for professionalizing the Private Service industry. She is a dynamic and passionate educator, public speaker, and a natural storyteller. She freely shares her knowledge and mentors clients in identifying and creating “Their Vision for Service!”

Mrs. Starkey provides on-site consultations to Private Estates and Clubs, Luxury Market Hotels and Businesses, to identify their Service Visions, customize their Style of Service, and develop a Service Management Plans.

Mr. Mark E. Tollison

Mr. Mark TollisonChief Strategy Officer / Director of Admissions

J.D., M.B.A., C.H.M.

Mr. Tollison brings his twenty plus years of combined business and private service management experience to assist with the continued success of Starkey International. As Chief Strategy Officer, he utilizes his business expertise to passionately pursue business strategies and relationships that position Starkey International as the unrivaled leader of private service education, certification, and placement worldwide. As Director of Admissions, he employs his years of experience in private service management to insure all qualified candidates fully understand and receive the incomparable benefits of becoming a Starkey Certified Household/Estate Manager.


Mr. Tollison holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in English, a Master’s in Business Administration, a Juris Doctorate in Law, as well as a Certificate in Household/Estate Management. His charitable participation includes outreach programs for children at risk, the Jaycees, Rotary, the United Way, and other charitable causes. He also serves as a professor of English and Business for colleges and universities when his time permits.

Mr. Gary Smith

Mr. Gary SmithDirector of Placement

BA MS

Gary Smith comes to Starkey & Associates with 29 years experience in the United States Air Force. He spent two years enlisted, attained the rank of Colonel, before retiring last year as the Director of Personnel for the USAF Academy. Mr Smith’s time as an Air Traffic Controller, years in recruiting and human resource, make him a valuable asset to this profession. Mr. Smith’s education runs the gamut with a B.A. in percussion performance from The University of Missouri Conservatory of Music to a M.S. in Aviation Management from Embry-Riddle University. His experience, knowledge, and passion for mentoring others is an outstanding combination contributing to the future success of Starkey Graduates.

Ms. Lucia Miltenberger

Ms. Lucia MiltenbergerPrivate Service Training Instructor

B.S., M.A. in Adult Education

Lucia Miltenberger has a passion and a gift for sharing her knowledge of wine, spirits and service. A long time favorite at Starkey, she holds “the unity of professionalism and savoir-faire as an asset in the world of competent service.”

Her Masters Degree in Adult Education, and her background in formal dining, wine and wine cellar management, personal catering and serving Denver Country club clientele has uniquely prepared her to teach those in personal service. Her students are in awe of her vast experience, and her ability to clearly and easily share her knowledge. Ms. Miltenberger has dedicated her life to sharing her love of service and wines.

 

Mr. Matthew Henderson

Matthew HendersonDirector of Information Technologies

Matthew Henderson grew up in a home of service minded professionals; his father was a Naval Officer and Chaplin.  His upbringing in a military home grounded him in the rules of structure and organization.  At the same time his parent’s example of service to their country and personal generosity gave him the foundation to understand the hearts and needs of others.  As the I.T. Director at Starkey International, Matt brings the experience of running his own small business and serving in the computer and technical fields for corporations in Southern California. In addition, he has a strong and highly creative background in photography, graphic design and web development.   Matthew is delighted to support the educational excellence of Starkey International, staff and students.

Ms. Theresa Swaim

Ms. Theresa SwaimAdmissions Coordinator

B.S. in Sociology

Theresa Swaim is the Starkey International Institute’s Admissions Representative and assistant to Mr. Mark Tollison. Mrs. Swaim completed her Bachelors of Science in Sociology from Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina (including a semester of studies in London) and a Paralegal Certificate from Kaplan College in Thornton, Colorado.  Raised on the beautiful island of Oahu in a Marine military and Christian mission-minded home, Mrs. Swaim learned the art of, and developed her heart of service at an early age. She is articulate, well traveled, and personally understands the value of choosing ones career. Mrs. Swaim has several years working in the admissions field as an advisor and degree planner.

Dr. Lloyd Lewan

Dr. Lloyd Lewan Starkey Mentor and Friend

Dr. Lewan has been a champion of Starkey International for the last 15 years. He teaches leadership to all students within the Household Management programs, and serves as co-host for all of Starkey’s Formal Dinners within the entertaining curriculum. A leader of men, Dr. Lewan helps to grow Starkey’s students in being ethical, relationship centered, and integrity driven as leaders in their profession.

Dr. Lloyd S. Lewan holds the honor of Chairman of the Board and Executive Dean Emeritus for the Institute for Shipboard Education, an organization sponsoring the international program Semester at Sea. Lewan served the program, affiliated with Chapman University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Pittsburgh.  He has also been involved in the Denver community in economic development, international trade, gang prevention, human services, and burned children services; and over twenty years as Santa Claus for The Children’s Hospital, Denver.

Lewan is the author of To be a Leader: Leadership Beyond Management, (2002) and Women in the Workplace: A Man’s Perspective (1988, 1997). A former United States Marine Corp officer, Lewan earned his doctorate from Oklahoma State University. In 2003, he received two honorary doctorates: a doctor of humane letters from Chapman University and a doctor of laws from the University of Denver College of Law.

Ms. Paula Faulkner

Ms. Paula FaulknerChief Financial Officer / HR Director

Miss Faulkner is Starkey International's Comptroller and Human Resources Manager. An integral part of Starkey’s team, she brings 30+ years of expertise serving high-end CPA offices including MPI, Venturi Technologies, Integrity Solutions, and several other organizations. Miss Faulkner is also on the Board of the Denver Broncos Quarterback Club (and naturally is an avid Denver Broncos fan), as well as the Colorado Prevention Center Foundation. Aside from her accounting and Human Resources background, Miss Faulkner is the notary for Starkey International.

Mr. William Althoff

Mr. William AlthoffExecutive Chef and Private Service Training Instructor

Certified Executive Chef, C.H.M.

Mr. Althoff has an easy, gentle style of teaching with genuine laughter and a natural ability to reach all students.  He has a broad Service and Culinary Expertise, and has helped develop Starkey’s HQ Service Management Software!

Having served three U.S. Presidents at the White House and the Vice President’s Residence, its Mr. Althoff’s mission, as an educator and mentor, to pass his 25 years of service experience to the next generation of service professionals.  His specialties include Setting up a Household for Service, Service Leadership, Boundaries and Private Entertaining.

Ms. Debra Bullock

Ms. Debra BullockDirector of Education

C.H.H.E., Certified Household Manager

Ms. Bullock leads Starkey’s educational experience by leveraging her deep knowledge of the high-net worth lifestyle needs to Household Management and Service as an Expertise. Her consistent and gracious style is greatly loved by all.

Ms. Bullock has 33 years of service experience. Her philosophy about genuine relationships and quality has been polished over many years and has built her a wide reputation for a gracious, old guard housekeeping expertise. Her work at the world famous Brown Palace Hotel is well known by her steady commitment and her ability to be exacting in creating an organized yet luxurious experience.

Mr. Dwight Tjornhom

Mr. Dwight TjornhomPrivate Service Training Instructor

Certified Household Manager

Mr. Tjornhom continues a 25 year career in Private Service as Personal Assistant to Mrs. Mary Louise Starkey.  As a Starkey Educator, Mr. Tjornhom is sharing his detailed knowledge of Household Management and Butler service in both the European and American households. Born in New Jersey, Mr. Tjornhom learned early in life he had a service heart.  After graduating from Starkey International in 1995 he went on to work in London for 6 years, then served as Butler and Household-Estate manager to some of the more prominent homes in New York.  He brings a wide knowledge of technique in housekeeping, and care of fine art and antiques emphasizing a gracious, yet responsive service style with the consistent goal of promoting team spirit, improving technical skills, and fostering mutual respect.

Mrs. Sarah Schaefer

Mrs. Sarah SchaeferPlacement Specialist

B.A., M.A.

Sarah Schaefer has a passion for guiding professionals into a career path that both emphasizes their skill sets and enriches their lives. She completed her Bachelors in Psychology and Anthropology at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota and her Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois. Mrs. Schaefer’s experience in professional development, employee motivation, and recruiting are essential for the placement department in supporting our high-net worth clientele; and great assets to Starkey’s Graduates in positioning them for the most appropriate position. She sees every Starkey Graduate as a Service Artist and works diligently to place them where they can best practice their art.

Ms. Helga Day

Private Service Training Instructor

Ms. Helga DayHelga Day has been with Starkey International® since 1983. She began as a member of Mrs. Starkey’s Housekeeping team, keeping both private clients and Mrs. Starkey in order! She grew and prospered within the Starkey organization and educational institute to become its fine linen and valet care expert. You will find Ms. Day at all formal dinners monitoring the table linen, and also educating Starkey students in the decorative art of floral design. Born in Berlin, Germany, Ms. Day has a rich background in hospitality both in Berlin and at Denver’s prestigious Brown Palace Hotel. For the past 26 years she has continued to bring the old-world knowledge of caring for very fine things.
